And by the way, did you know that until 2015, the parcel of land known as Dahala Khagrabari was the world’s only third-order enclave? The 1.7-acre field was a piece of Indian territory, surrounded by a piece of Bangladeshi territory, surrounded (stay with me) by a piece of Indian territory, surrounded (we’re almost there) by Bangladesh proper. One apocryphal story explained the curiosity as the result of ink spilled on a map by an inebriated British colonialist.
Alas, the world did not in 2015 gain another fabulously interesting third-order enclave, but rather Dahala Khagrabari was ceded by India to Bangladesh as part of a huge enclave swap. Since then, we have had to settle for De Kastelein—a bit of the Netherlands stuck into a bit of Belgium … stuck into a bit of the Netherlands.
