Air raid shelter, Hanoi, Vietnam, 1968 ‘I had my first experience of war as an adult in 1967 in Hanoi,’ Billhardt said. ‘I saw that concrete pipes had been dug into the city’s sidewalks, where people were now holding out. Anyone who found a place there during a bombing raid and pulled a concrete cover over themselves was quite well protected. There was no protective cover on one of the pipes, and when I looked inside, I saw the frightened eyes of children. Four children were stuck in this pipe.
