Do you think social media is addicting?
NEWS | 25 October 2026
I turned off notifications when I realized that I'd get one, and then look up 45 minutes later to realize I'd been scrolling mindlessly. That helped a lot. I also started reading novels again in the evening. I was so eager to get back to my book that I wasn't even tempted to log on. And after a month or so of that, I didn't even miss social media at all. (I also have had an "I do not watch online videos" policy for years - if someone sends me a video, I tell them to just summarize it for me or tell me the punchline. I don't want to watch three minutes of skateboarding just to see them fall, or ten minutes of them cooking a cake just so they can tell me it's delicious, or whatever it is in the video that people find so clever...the vicarious experience is just not interesting to me.)
