Amazon Web Services CEO Adam Selipsky is stepping down from his role leading Amazon's cloud unit, according to an internal memo viewed by Business Insider and later posted to Amazon's website.

Selipsky's departure is effective on June 3.

Matt Garman, the senior vice president of sales, marketing, and global services for AWS, is set to assume the CEO role.

"Matt knows our customers and business as well as anybody in the world, and has senior leadership experience on the product and demand generation side," Amazon CEO Andy Jassy wrote in an email sent to staff on May 14.

Selipsky, who first worked for AWS between 2005 and 2016, was tapped by Jassy to lead the unit in 2021. He'll be taking the opportunity to recharge and spend time with family, the memo says.

"Given the state of the business and the leadership team, now is an appropriate moment for me to make this transition, and to take the opportunity to spend more time with family for a while, recharge a bit, and create some mental free space to reflect and consider the possibilities," Selipsky wrote.

Selipsky led AWS during the height of the pandemic when the shift to remote work spurred an unprecedented spike in demand for cloud services. In 2023, the unit's revenue growth slowed to record lows, but sales have begun to pick up as demand for generative-artificial-intelligence services builds.

The news was first reported by The Verge.
